Consumer Reports (February 2012 edition) headlines “Take on your Bank. Fight Back or Flee.” #BTDNOW. Industry experts and analysts predict that fee hikes and tougher account requirements will more than likely continue. They do suggest that consumers are likely to find lower fees and better rates at … “larger credit unions, and online institutions.”
The big question remains “Does it make sense to switch?” Folks who rallied behind Bank Transfer Day believed so. Tough-talking Troy believes that the momentum is going in the right direction as long as consumers don’t get lazy again. For years TTT has been a proponent that Every day is Bank Transfer Day (tm) and reels in amazement that someone had to actually start a social media campaign to get people to do the right thing. Why is it when it comes to money, many consumers take the “hands in the pockets, look the other way” approach instead of standing up like Norma Rae and demanding a change? (Yep, that dates TTT, doesn’t it? If you care about the “Norma Rae” comment, please Google it – grin.) Back to the point in hand, maybe this has something to do with how wealthy Americans think they are (or are not).
In the Consumer Reportsarticle Suze Orman says, “Everyone should size up their bank and check out the fees they’re paying, but many won’t. People barely open up their statements because they don’t want to see the money they don’t have. You’re now asking people to open a statement and try to find the fees they’re being charged.” TTT sees this as an opportunity. Why? Not because it is just another hopeless cycle for consumers, but because this is why credit unions were formed. The credit union motto is “People helping people, help themselves.” The goal of every credit union is to help consumers of all ages, classes and demographics to break the hold of financial hopelessness.
Tough-talking Troy is wondering, “When will people get sick and tired enough to take money matters into their own hands?” If you understand this concept then you know why TTT is telling everyone he meets that Every day is Bank Transfer Day ™.
