Clark Howard’s financial perspective

Last week we blogged about International Credit Union Week. Jessica shared some thoughts on the differences between banks and credit unions. Adam talked about credit union convenience. And Troy talked tough about moving your money (wrapped in a history lesson!)

Over the weekend I was in a Borders book store checking out the new books and enjoying my Starbucks. Financial media guru Clark Howard has a new book out Living Large in Lean Times. Interested, I put down my grande coffee and paged thru it. Was fascinated to read about his 250+ tips on buying smarter and building a better financial future.

Clark Howard is a strong proponent of credit unions and savings banks. I catch his TV show from time to time and have noticed he is recommending CU’s even more these days. In this book, Clark highlights some of the advantages of joining a credit union:

• A “ton” of great products at your disposal.
• Access to all the great services you’d find at a “big bank”…and more!
• Outstanding customer service.

In the book he mentions that convenience is something you may not get at all credit unions. He states that these credit unions may not have the branch footprint of, say, a mega-bank. We’ll agree to disagree on the former, but concede the latter may be true.  Credit unions would love to have a branch on every corner, but for sound financial reasons, that’s impractical. Rather, credit unions like South Carolina Federal Credit Union will continue to look for opportunities to expand the branch presence where it makes the most sense for members.

An example of this is South Carolina Federal’s new Glenn McConnell branch which opened yesterday. It’s located in West Ashley right off Glenn McConnell on Shelby Ray Court. Credit union research showed this was the right location to best serve the concentration of families and businesses in this area.

Many readers of this blog are already members of South Carolina Federal. If you’re not already a member, and are seeing the growing mountain of evidence to support the move to a credit union, maybe now is the time to visit, call, or click for more information.
