Color Me Rad, Charleston!

color me rad 5kHave you ever wanted to know what it feels like to be a modern work of art?  Have you ever wanted to be a living rainbow, in hopes that you may suddenly find a pot o’ gold at your feet?  Now is your chance!

Welcome to the Color Me Rad 5k, coming up on Saturday, March 23, 2013 at the all-purpose Ladson Fair Grounds!  What is this Color Me Rad 5k?  The gist of it is this, you run and people on the side lines throw “color bombs” at you that contain various shades of colored corn starch.  By the end of the race, you will probably look like something out of a unicorn’s dream, all rainbows and smiles!

I was nervous about my first color race, so I asked my friend Connie, who has done a similar race, some of her tips on how to make sure you aren’t still looking like a busted bag of skittles by the time Monday morning rolls around.

  1. Eye Protection:  Wear sunglasses.  Wear goggles.  Wear a Darth Vader mask.  You want to make sure that you keep your eyes protected.  No one wants to see you crying rainbows.  That’s just weird.
  2. Face Mask:  You could go wild, wild west style and wear a bandanna over your face.  You could wear a painter’s mask.  I’ve seen the results of glitter being thrown in someone’s face, and it wasn’t pretty.  Even though the corn starch is perfectly safe, it’s probably much more enjoyable when it isn’t in your respiratory system.
  3. Leave-In Conditioner/Coconut Oil:  Especially if you have light-colored or color-treated hair, you probably will want to slather in some sort of protective oil in your hair before the race.  It really helps to protect your hair from accidental “rainbowification.”  As an added bonus, your hair will be luxuriously soft and supple after this functional deep conditioning treatment!
  4. Towels/Trash Bags for your car:  Unless you will be walking to/from the race, you are going to want to protect your car’s upholstery from your beautifully colored self after the race.  Cover your car’s seats with dark colored towels and/or trash bags to keep that plush interior looking showroom fresh!

Above all, don’t forget to let loose and have an amazing time.  When else do you get to run through a rainbow?  Oh, I did hear that there was a circus in town the same weekend as the Color Me Rad 5k though, so just make sure you aren’t mistaken for a clown and suddenly pulled into center ring to tame an elephant, OK?

I am a single mother of two dogs and two cats (all adopted) and recently purchased my first home. I am a graduate of Winthrop University and of the School of Hard Knocks. I enjoy reading, writing, spending time with family, watching movies, and experimenting with new and unusual popcorn toppings . I would be much better at riding a bicycle if I could stop. I recently gave up cable television, so please don't ruin television shows for me by telling me what is happening. I'll watch them when they get on a streaming service in six months.

I’m hoping the weather holds out. Although water + color bombs could be the most awesome thing ever! It will be exciting either way.
