Sounds like a question from a horror movie? Well, it could be if …
A friend of mine was having a meal at a local deli a few weeks back. It was an unusually crowded lunch time. She nestled down at a table with a couple friends and began to enjoy her freshly made deli wrap.
All through the meal she kept thinking, “Why does someone keep bumping my purse? Can’t they just sit still and eat?” My friend moves her purse to the other side, but now it is more exposed in the aisle. Within a couple of minutes, the middle-aged couple that was sitting next to her table exits the deli. “Finally!” She expresses with disgust, “I can put my purse back on the other arm of my chair.”
After a few more bits of that chicken caesar deli wrap she leaves to run a quick errand. While standing at the register the moment of panic arises, “Where is my debit card? I know the clerk at the deli gave it back to me. Here is my receipt.” A realization suddenly pops into her head, “They took my debit card.” Pulling out her phone; a quick call to the credit union confirms her suspicions. In less than 20 minutes the perpetrator had spent over $500 in gift cards at various restaurants, filled up the gas tank, and bought a shake at another restaurant’s drive through.
My friend was so upset that she called a few of the restaurants and they confirmed the description of the woman using the card as being the same one that had been sitting only a few feet away.
It’s a tough lesson to learn, but when my friend now says, “Let’s go to lunch, it’s on me.” I ask, “So, where’s your debit card?”

Wow! It’s lucky she figured out it was missing so fast. Did your friend get her money back from the restaurants?
Angel… she was made whole, but it was a frustrating ordeal. To be that close to someone who is doing harm to you and not even know it. What a sad state when you put yourself out there in a trusting way and someone takes advantage of you. It is just … well … crazy!
How crazy! Good thing she realized so quickly…who knows how much they would of gotten if it had been any longer before she realized her card was missing.Lucky for her it was her debit card and not cash at least with your debit card you are abe to dispute the fraud and get your money back. No more purse on the back of the chair for me.
It is crazy! Glad to hear she didn’t lose any of her money
