My Traveling Debit Card Heads North

Portland Head Lighthouse in Maine

Back in June, My Traveling Debit Card headed south to Houston, TX to get a respite from the 90 degree temps here in the low country. As I wrote back then, it was a blazing, scorching hot weekend.

So, having enough of this hot weather, My Traveling Debit Card booked a long weekend trip to Maine. Went there two weeks ago and it was nothing short of spectacular. The leaves were at their October peak, and the air was crisp…but not cold.

For me, the Maine seacoast is exactly as you would picture it in a travel brochure. Rocky coastlines, picturesque lighthouses, and lobster shacks darting the small coastal towns.

A couple highlights:

  • Visited at least 4 or 5 coastal lighthouses. All were unique, and most are operational. The picture above is the Portland Head Lighthouse. It was built in 1787 at the directive of George Washington and is known as the most photographed lighthouse in the world.
  • Drove up to Freeport, Maine to see the L.L. Bean Flagship Store. It’s one of those company/outlet stores that seemingly goes on for miles. Lot’s of looking and just a bit of purchasing (with My Traveling Debit Card, of course).
  • Ate a bunch of Lobster Rolls. No claw cracking on this trip. It seems as if most visitors, like myself, preferred the delicious lobster rolls. 1 lb of lobster gently nested in a toasted bun with just a hint of butter drizzled on top. Yum!

As a side note, I’m convinced a low country entrepreneur could make big $$$ setting up a roadside shrimp shack selling “shrimp rolls” much like the lobster rolls in Maine.

Interestingly enough, this past weekend, the lower seacoast of Maine where I visited got up to a foot of snow. Ahhhh…a great place to visit, but My Traveling Debit Card and I were glad to be back here in the lowcountry!
