The other weekend I was at a neighborhood oyster roast. They were some of the best oysters I’ve eaten in a while. In between shucking, the discussion turned to taxes. I was really surprised at how many of my neighbors were well on their way to completing their own taxes. Hmmm, I thought, working on my taxes in early February just didn’t seem to be a priority right now. In fairness, I have to admit I knew the season is upon us when I drove down Rivers Avenue last week and chuckled after seeing the guy dressed as that tax preparer Statue of Liberty.
Feeling as though it’s time to catch up to my neighbors and get serious about tax preparation this month, I did some research. This year, South Carolina Federal Credit Union is offering tax preparation assistance two ways:
1. TurboTax…via your Online Banking account. This continues to be one of the most popular options for those up to the task of “do-it-yourself.” As a side note, this is how most of my oyster-shucking neighbors were doing their taxes.
2. South Carolina Financial Solutions has engaged a CPA Firm (Certified Public Accountant) to assist our credit union members with filing their income tax returns. To schedule an appointment, stop by a branch or reach out to the Contact Center. Note: Tax preparation fees will vary depending on complexity of the return and types of forms used.
As we’ve shared in the past, there are other tax preparation services available to residents of the lowcountry. In a recent Post & Courier article, they noted it can be confusing to try and understand how to take advantage of all S.C. tax credits. One of these weekend’s I’ll have to evaluate the complexity of my taxes and will probably use either TurboTax (via Online Banking…of course), or the tax prep service offered to credit union members. Whew…with that problem solved, I need to figure out where the next neighborhood oyster roast will be.
